The Joy of Sox: 30+ must-knit designs
Have you seen it yet? Joy of Sox has hit the market and it is good, people.
There are over 30 patterns in this book and I'm really impressed with the diversity of designs and overall awesome-ness of the package. I'm a huge fan of the hardcover with spiral binding too, which makes it a very practical book as well.
Have I mentioned that I have a pattern in there? It's called Girl's Best Friend and they are thigh-high socks with a lace panel, worked from the toe-up.
I kind of think hand-knit socks are better than real diamonds. You don't have to agree with me.
Do not let the length of these socks or the mohair content of Schaefer Anne scare you, or the size 0 needles either. I have fallen in love with these socks after having some doubts initially. Love is like that, if you can get past the crazy and the fear you'll be warm and fuzzy in all the best ways.
This brings me to the contest: I'm giving away a free copy of this book! This contest is open to everybody. To enter, simply leave a comment (see below) here by the end of the day, Saturday September 26th. I'll let the mighty random number generator decide the winner. Details:

2. In the comments, tell me one thing you love about socks.
3. By leaving these comments, you are giving me permission to blog some of my favorite responses. I'll give you credit, of course.
If you're curious to know more, the first review on Amazon is pretty fantastic:
5.0 out of 5 stars Great sock book!, August 31, 2009
By Anne -
"I own just about every sock knitting book ever written. I had to review this one because I like it so much! It has great sock patterns, a lot of patterns (32), beautiful photographs, and a spiral binding. What makes it unique is that it has little narratives and fun statistics sprinkled throughout that make it a sock book that you can actually read. The "Joy of Sox" double entendres in the book are kind of cute too! This is now one of my favorite sock books."

Congrats on the pattern! I think it's super cute and would love to knit up a pair for myself. :)
ReplyDeleteI love contests, and I like socks because there are so many infinitely cute patterns out there and socks are small! You have a chance to get to more of them that way. ;-)
Those are pretty socks! Although I have to say, I love real diamonds more...
ReplyDeleteI love socks because they're a sweet little design canvas, and I can play with an idea without too much anxiety. It's just a sock!
Frighteningly enough, I may be about to go from my beloved sport weight to :gasp: fingering weight. You sock people are getting to me!
Love your pattern!
ReplyDeleteI love love love socks. They are the reason I learned to knit. You can get fun and funky. Or you can be simple and plain. Regardless, they are like wearing love on your feet.
but there are so MANY things to love about socks! they are portable. you get the best yarn for them, in the most awesome colors. they keep your feet warm and make you feel cozy even if they are the only warm thing you have on.
ReplyDeletei think the best thing is that... let me put it like this: if you make a scarf for someone, there's a chance they will say "weeellll, i don't really wear scarves all that often." but who doesn't wear socks?
Nice work on the socks! There are many things I like about sock knitting, but I guess it's the reliability that keeps me coming back. There's so much variety in the yarn and pattern, but in the end I can count on having a finished product that FITS, is beautiful, and makes me smile each time I wear them.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your pattern! Looks like a great book.
ReplyDeleteI love socks because, as a project, they're portable.
Very cool pattern! What do I love about socks? Everything....they're practical, small, portable, they keep my feet warm, there is such a variety of patterns, I'll never be bored. :)
ReplyDeletewhile i love the th ought of thigh high handknit socks, i have one little problem: i don't wear socks. mostly because i don't wear shoes. i live in my birkies, and don'teven wear sockswith t hem, and i wear t hem year-round. i've got 2 pair of handknit socks that i've had for2 years, that show absolutely no wear. sigh.
ReplyDeletehowever, i'd stilllove t he book,lol.
You can get ahold of me via my handle at gmail.
ReplyDeleteI love socks because they are portable and impressive to non-knitters and also they keep my feets warm which is totally important. And in the case of knee- and thigh-highs, they keep my legs warm, extending skirt & shorts season. Which rocks.
this book doesn't look nearly as sultry as you led me to believe! :)
ReplyDeletei love socks because the colors and squishiness of sock yarn. lovely! i had to learn to knit socks just so i could get to use the yarn more often.
Ooh, am I eligible? You know where to find me. Wink wink.
ReplyDeleteI like socks because I'm, as Shannon puts it, a "freeze-baby" and they are warm and lovely. And without socks, everyone's feet would probably be really sweaty and gross, even moreso than normal.
Congratulations! The diamond lace patterned socks are stunning. I knit my first pair of knee socks last winter and would love to make ones that go thigh high. The best part of hand-knitted socks is that they fit and you can knit on them while waiting--anywhere.
ReplyDeleteYou can find me on Rav as paisleyapron.
You can contact me at latillett@comcast.net, or just look for me at the end of the couch at Twisted closest to the window.
ReplyDeleteI love socks because they come in pairs. I collect swans and champagne glasses for the same reason.
beautiful socks!
ReplyDeletei love socks because at the end of a ridiculously long work day, taking off my shoes and seeing the socks i have knit gives me something to be happy about!
you can find me on ravelry as yelley. ^_^
Congrats on the pattern , sure looks great.
ReplyDeleteLoving those sox, congrats on the book
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the book! Those socks are to die for.
ReplyDeleteI think I like knitting socks more than wearing them. But wearing something I made that is soft and fits perfectly, in funky colors and designs just makes me happy.
shutupnclick@gmail.com
very cute pattern!
ReplyDeleteI love socks because they're small (even for my big feet) & portable. They can be divided into sections (toe, foot, heel, cuff, etc) (thus enabling multiple occasions of feelings of accomplishment & progress as you complete each section). You can easily learn & apply new techniques as well.
I love sox because they are portable, quickly done, and even if I lose or gain weight, they'll still fit me. Also, I can make sox for other people without breaking the banking, or doing too much planning when buying yarn. Into the stash, back out for whoever that colorway fits, rather than whoever fits that many skeins.
ReplyDeleteI'm riordjo on Rav.
I knit loads of pairs of socks to give away - family, friends, coworkers, strangers in airports - any one who would like some. Socks are the perfect item - knitting therapy for me, relatively inexpensive, portable, and reactions to hand knit socks range from "OMG I never knew socks were knitted!" to "They remind me of my grandmother." And as my son, who stopped wanting sweaters knit my mom after the age of 10, said "There's nothing embarrasing about socks. Worst case scenario, they get covered up by boots instead of being worn with Berkinstocks." VREDE Linda Shields
ReplyDeleteI love how putting on socks in the fall feels so good. After a summer of mostly bare feet, nothing feels better than slipping on a pair of soft, warm socks on a chilly morning.
ReplyDeletersgrandinetti@yahoo(DOt)com
I love to wear socks, because they make you feel so cozy! I hate when my feet are cold. I also like to knit socks a lot too, which is why this book would be a great prize!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your pattern. My fav thing about socks is the variety and they keep my feet warm (I hate cold feet). I have heard about this book and really would love to get it. As for reaching me...you have my email I suppose or wasntme187 at Rav. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI love your pattern on that book, the book is on my must buy-list!
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks because I can afford more luxurioys yarn on them that I do on bigger knits. Socks are the perfect lecture knitting project and I love giving socks as presents.
You'll find me on ravelry as Tui.
I love those socks that you've made! Yes, size 0 needles would scare me (the last time I made socks with size 2s it took me months to finish them!) but for something so gorgeous I think it would be worth it! Thank you for sharing your talent with the knitting world!
ReplyDeletejeckalantern@google.com
The most important thing of course: they keep my feet warm in the winter!
ReplyDeleteHello! I've seen your socks at a Rav friend's favorites. I love their color!
ReplyDeleteSocks: one of the best knitting projects for a university student. Yes, they are portable and really useful for that 10 minutes between classes, or when I'm waiting for the bus... Also I can knit a bit everyday (half an hour, ie) and I can see some results!! 1 or 2cm worked. And finally, a pair of socks takes me about 2 months... if I did a sweater I wouldn't finish it never!!!
((I hope u can understand all I've written, I need to improve my English :( ))
I love socks because they keep the cat hair from sticking to my feet. :) In actuality I love socks, especially tall socks because they are cozy and make me feel like there's a happy secret of fun hidden under my pant legs and booths in the winter.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I love about socks is that they're a portable project.

Socks are definitely better than diamonds. But socks with diamonds in them? Blows the mind! I gotta admit those socks are spectacular, especially in my favorite color. Can't wait to see the book on the shelves of my LYS!
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Jessie and I do love socks. They are the project that I have learned the most about new stitches. I can knit cables because of socks, argyle and intricate patterns. I am making a pair of socks for all four of my children this year for Christmas in their school colors and a pair for our mothers, and pairs for cousins, and sister in laws and...
ReplyDeleteI love wearing my own and giving away hand knit socks because they are like a little hug for your feet. XXOOXX
ReplyDelete(elizabeth_strommeathotmaildotcom)
Great pattern! Just one more thing I have to knit now...*sigh*.teehee.
ReplyDeleteOnly one thing about socks? Hmmmm. I think my absolute favorite thing is that when I make socks for my sister I don't have to make them match...pattern, color or anything. She says that the fact that they are socks automatically means they match! Perfect.
Thanks for the fun! I love hand knit socks because they seem to snug my feet - almost massage them. And, nothing keeps my feet warmer than wool. Love 'em! My gmail should work if I win!
ReplyDeleteI have been meaning to knit some knee socks for some time now and this may just push me to knit a pair for this winter. So cute! I love knitting socks because (a) I adore sock yarn, and (b) socks are small and portable, so I can knit them anywhere. Great pattern - congrats on having it published in what looks to be a new go-to book!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you- keep your diamonds- socks are a girls best friend. and my kids agree there is nothing like sliding a warm pair of hand knit socks over your toes. you just can take any problem all day long because you can wiggle your toes and know that mommy loves you. now if only I could get my mom to knit me socks.
ReplyDeleteI always have a pair of socks on the needles the are just the perfect go to project always easy to tuck into my purse as I run out the door.
Long time fan of your blog, first time commenting! Beautiful socks! The color is great!
ReplyDeleteI love socks because they're a little bit of warm comfort. Like a hug for your feet! :)
I'm on Ravelry as theburklepersona.
I adore those purple socks ... they will be perfect for me ... I live in the desert and most of my pants are capri length ... on cool days those socks will be superb.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your clever, creative and useful pattern. Find me at pdurrant1@hotmail.com
I've just started knitting them, but I like that they're a portable project and when finished they're a little bit of surprise underneath the pantleg of a otherwise boring outfit.
ReplyDeleteI'm on my third pair of socks, and so I still find them very mysterious. I enjoy reading directions that don't make sense, following them, and producing a three-dimensional object. I also like working with light weight yarn and tiny needles. Except for a few tricky moments, knitting a sock makes me feel calm.
ReplyDeleteI'm on ravelry as "knottyclaire"
This book looks fantastic! With the end of summer I am ready to knit and would love this book.
ReplyDeleteOh how I love knitting socks! Any technique that you love or want to learn, socks are a great canvas. I learned long ago that I can't make much use of thos beautiful lace shawls I kept making.. But lace socks? Perfect. And I love that they have a finite existance--no worrying about picking the "perfect" color/pattern to last into the next decade. -aimee
ReplyDeleteuridel@att.net
I love socks because they are such an awesome way to express your personality.
ReplyDeleteYour purple socks look sooo nice!..
ReplyDeleteI don't really know how to knit socks, I've mostly played around with simple patterns (scarves, small hats, things like that) but I remember seeing my grandmother knitting socks, using 4 needles - I've only used circulars so far - and I used to be so impressed! it really seemed a difficult knitting method to me :) So I am taking this as a challenge - maybe the book can help me get started on some socks knitting projects! that would be awesome!
For contact purposes, I'm mccristina on ravelry :) I'd love to learn more from you
I love socks because they are small enough to take with me everywhere!
ReplyDeleteYou can find me on Ravelry as: briannep
Your pattern is amazing. I knit my first pair of socks last year, and I love them. They are so soft and warm :) Part of what I love about socks is that they are so portable. I like to take my knitting with me, so I don't get bored.
ReplyDeleteI love socks. Fuzzy socks make cold winter nights cozy. Long, light socks make summer legs the bees knees. Toeless socks show off little piggies. Hand-knit socks are a safe zone for worn out feet and an expression lighting up dancing toes. I love socks!
ReplyDeleteI love socks because my feet work very hard for me, and there are few kind things I can do for my feet that are as kind as good socks. they comfort and beautify.

I like knitting socks. My mom loves knitting socks. I have a daughter who loves to wear handknitted socks. It all seems to work. Looks like a fun book. And congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI love socks because they can be terribly easy or awsomely compicated, yet they knit up quick and you have an amazing cool F.O. ! And there are sooo many cool sock yarns out there- you could never be bored! Kim T. A.K.A. sunshinekim on Rav.
ReplyDeleteHow do I love thee, hand knit socks? Let me count the ways...
ReplyDelete1. What could possibly be better than hand knit socks, tailor made to fit to your specific feets?! Talk about comfy AND fabulous!
2. Knee highs, anklets, lace, stockinette - from plain jane to the most intricate of lace work, there is surely a hand knit sock to suit everyone's taste.
3. One word: Portable. 'Nuff said!
Pretty... Love the purple.
ReplyDeleteI'm still a sock newb but I'm already addicted to the ease, quickness and practicality of sock making. And, after one has 10 scarves (and friends who have 10..) one has to find other small portable projects to work.
katsrevenge AT gmail.com
What a pretty pattern! How many yards does it take to knit up, though? The mind boggles!
ReplyDeleteI love contests too (orbviously, I'm entering it!), and I have actually just cast on for my first pair of socks. I haven't decided yet if I am a sockaholic, but so far....
;-)
Oh, FYI, I cast on for the Sunday Swing socks from the Summer 09 Knitty. So far so good! :-)
Anyhow, my theoretical reason to like socks is that they are small, relatively inexpensive to knit, and you can do all sorts of crazy things with them. We'll see if I feel the same later!
I like socks because : 1. I have hardwood floors.
ReplyDelete2. I can knit in meetings and no one across the table notices, and I am less bored.
My knitting book budget is blown ... I can't buy another book right now ... and I covet the patterns you highlight ... particularly those toeless socks ! What an amazing idea ... for yogis and others ...
ReplyDeletePaula pdurrant1@hotmail.com
Congrats on yet another publication!!! Gorgeous socks. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love socks b/c of the seemingly infinite variety of techniques you can use to knit them!
I love socks because they keep your feet warm and you can wear fun ones and kind of have them hidden beneath slacks!

I spotted your thigh-highs on Ravelry and loved them instantly!
ReplyDeleteWhy I love socks?
- because I always thought they were beyond me and I would never know how to knit them
- because now I can!
- because I am an ultratight knitter
- because they are the only things my daughters will let me knit for them
- and oh yes, because over here in the lowlands our feet are always cold, of course ;)
Kind regards from the Dutch polder!
